Day 1: Ground Rules and Life Goals

Homemade Flamingo cake with Cheetah print inside- nailed it!

Today is my official first day of not working! It feels...strange. Luckily I’ve already planned a coffee date, a list of errands that I was going to try to cram into my weekend but then realized I don’t have to do that anymore, and a vague idea of doing some sort of exercise. The Man who Works is, aptly, away on a work trip.

I’ve worked under the table since I was 11 and my first tax-paying gig was lifeguarding when I was 15. When I was a student, I always had some kind of work both during the school year and over the summer. Even when I was on maternity leave, on top of sustaining another human we were doing a lot of work overseeing the construction of our house.

It is a very real possibility that I will now spend the 50 hours I used to spend at work re-watching shows on Netflix in bed in my pajamas, alone and spiraling towards depression. So, I’m setting some simple ground rules for myself to mitigate the risk of having to be removed from my house with a crane:

  1. I will leave the house every day.

  2. I will do some kind of exercise every day.

  3. I will not watch more than 2 hours of TV every day.

It’s also good to have goals, but planning more than a month in advance right now seems impossible, as I don’t know what continent we will be living on in March (thanks, coronavirus). So my goals for February are:

  1. Prepare for moving by minimizing our possessions

  2. Climb Kilimanjaro and not die

It’s a short month, so I think that will do it!

Time to get out of my pajamas...after I watch just one episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
